The Saga Begins

Envisioned by George Lucas, the Star Wars franchise made its debut in 1997, the first installment in the saga being Episode IV – A New Hope. This era-defining movie introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a young moisture farmer from the planet Tatooine who is pulled into the Galactic Civil war when his aunt and uncle are killed by stormtroopers searching for two droids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). On his person, R2-D2 carries the plans to a world-destroying superweapon called the Death Star, given to him by Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and he also holds a message asking for the assistance of Obi-Wan Kenobi, an acquaintance of Luke who has adopted the persona of “Old Ben” Kenobi (Alec Guinness). Ben invites Luke to accompany him to the planet Alderaan and to learn about the Force, which the boy inherited from his father, Anakin. However, before they can begin their mission, the duo must first solicit the piloting skills of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew).

Following the overwhelming success of A New Hope, the franchise released two immediate sequels: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi (1983). These films were succeeded by two more trilogies — the prequels and sequels — and various spin-off TV series, such as The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian.
