The Masters Of Design

Prior to the establishment of Mondo, Tim League (the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema) visited a T-shirt store called Bang-On. Inspired by this experience, he proposed that he, Kier-La Janisse, and Lester Smolenski open a shop under the Drafthouse name. Smolenski, who worked for Bang-On, provided the graphics, and this facilitated the 2004 debut of Mondo Tees.

In that same year, the shop collaborated with Emo’s, an event venue in Austin, to launch an outdoor festival known as Cinemania. However, few tickets were sold, so the freelance designer Rob Jones was enlisted to create posters for several film screenings: Foxy Brown, Better Off Dead, and The Warriors. Jones continued to work with Mondo Tees and introduced the business to the talents of artists Todd Slater, Jay Ryan, and Tyler Stout. To capitalise on this development, the company shifted its attention to the creation of posters.

Over time, Mondo has expanded its operations and scale, securing licenses for various high-profile franchises: the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Star Wars, Transformers, Halo, DC Comics, The Last Of Us, Mission: Impossible, Blade Runner, Shaun Of The Dead, and more. Their critically acclaimed designs — many of which were created alongside world-famous artists, such as Becky Cloonan and Olly Moss — are used not only for posters but also for other forms of media (soundtracks LPs, steelbooks, and collectibles).
