Behind The Mask

Situated in New York, Rubies Candy Store was established in 1951 by Rubin — after whom the store was named — and Tillie Beige. In its early days, the shop sold comic books, newspapers, novelty items, and its namesake product; however, Ruble (Rubin’s nickname) changed the direction of their offerings in 1959, opting to distribute new items, such as novelty hats, under the name Ruble’s Fun House. This attracted a new clientele, including local drama teachers, and they began requesting more obscure items. Over time, the store’s product range expanded to comprise the likes of wigs, masks, accessories, and costumes. They even stocked film-quality outfits that could be rented for a short period of time.

The 1970s saw the inclusion of the Beige children, with Marc Beige — the new president of the company — officially changing the business’s name to Rubie’s Costume Company. His involvement catapulted the brand to international prominence, giving it the means to supply consumers from all corners of the globe.

Nowadays, Rubies sells costumes and accessories inspired by some of the biggest franchises: Batman, Suicide Squad, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Space Jam, Supergirl, Sonic The Hedgehog, SpongeBob SquarePants, Star Trek, Hello Kitty, Paw Patrol, Wonder Woman, and more. Joined by in-house-designed products, these are suited to all occasions, including Christmas, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and New Year’s Eve — amongst other major events.
