An ‘80s Classic

Directed by Joe Dante, Gremlins (1984) is a comedy film that centers around a mogwai — one of a group of creatures inspired by folklore — called Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel). Looking for a gift for his son, Billy (Zach Galligan), Randal Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) visits a store in Chinatown, where he is given the curious pet by the grandson (John Louie) of the enigmatic owner, Mr. Wing (Keye Luke). However, before Randal departs, the boy informs him of three unbreakable rules: First, the mogwai must not be exposed to sunlight. Second, it must not touch water. And finally, it must never be fed after midnight.

Unfortunately, Billy’s friend Pete (Corey Feldman) spills water on the creature, which Randal named Gizmo. This causes five more mogwai to spawn, and they proceed to trick Billy into feeding them before the clock strikes 12. Upon being fed, the once-furry creatures transform into the reptilian “gremlins”, malevolent monsters that start causing havoc.

In 1990, Dante returned with a direct sequel: The New Batch. This film features the return of Gizmo, who is taken by a group of scientists after the death of Mr. Wing. They start experimenting on him in a Manhattan-based high-rise building, the Clamp Centre, and this leads to the return of the sinister gremlins, led by Mohawk (the reincarnation of Stripe from the previous installment). Using the building’s sprinkler system, they manage to increase their numbers. Billy, who is now an employee of the building, must find a way to prevent their escape to the outside.
