Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Lilo & Stitch (2002) is a science-fiction animated film under the Walt Disney banner. The story centers around the eponymous Lilo Pelekai (Daveigh Chase), an orphan being looked after by her older sister, Nani (Tia Carrere). Since her sister doesn’t have any close friends, Nani allows Lilo to adopt a pet from the shelter. However, Lilo takes an interest in an alien runaway pretending to be a dog: Experiment 626 (Chris Sanders).

Renaming her new pet Stitch, Lilo and the chaotic alien become close friends. Unfortunately, Stitch is being pursued by Dr. Jumba Jookiba (David Ogden Stiers), his creator, and Agent Wendell Pleakley (Kevin McDonald). The ensuing destruction results in Nani losing her job, and social worker Cobra Bubbles (Ving Rhames) warns that Lilo will be placed in foster care if she doesn’t find work. After multiple failed attempts to recover the on-the-run Stitch, both Jookiba and Pleakley are removed from the assignment, replaced by Captain Gantu (Kevin Michael Richardson). Nevertheless, Jookiba continues his pursuit and subsequently destroys Nani’s home, which causes Cobra to declare that Lilo is no longer allowed to stay with her. When Lilo disappears into the woods to find Stitch, the pair of them is captured by Gantu. Stitch is able to escape, and he returns to Nani to help recover his newfound family.

Following the successful release of the first film, Disney expanded the franchise with various direct-to-video sequels and television series. To this day, it remains one of the company’s most successful properties.
