A New Generation Of Heroes

After Disney acquired the rights to the Star Wars franchise in 2012, they started expanding the established mythos and released their own trilogy of films. Directed by J.J. Abrams, The Force Awakens (2015) follows the climactic events of Return Of The Jedi (1983), introducing audiences to a universe without the Galactic Empire. However, despite the efforts of Rebel Alliance to extinguish the influence of the dark side, a new force rises to take the Empire’s place: the First Order. Led by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and his masked apprentice, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), this powerful military force seeks to depose the New Republic.

Standing against the First Order is the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), who has acquired a map that supposedly leads to the hidden location of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Fearing the Jedi Knight’s return, the First Order seeks to reclaim this map and tracks him to the planet Jakku. Poe is captured, but a stormtrooper called FN-2187 (nicknamed “Finn”) helps him escape. Nevertheless, they soon crash while attempting to retrieve the map, which Poe gave to the droid BB-8 for safekeeping. Separated from Poe, Finn (John Boyega) meets a scavenger called Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Over the course of the Sequel Trilogy, these new characters become important heroes in the Resistance and help to fight back against the First Order. In addition to Luke Skywalker, they are joined by a number of other familiar faces from the Original Trilogy: Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams).
