Under The Sea

Released in 1989 by Walt Disney Animation Studios, The Little Mermaid — which originates as an 18th-century fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson — is an animated film that centers on its eponymous character, a young mermaid called Ariel (Jodi Benson). Living in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, she dreams of interacting with the human world, but her father, the venerable King Triton (Kenneth Mars), is quick to remind her that such contact is forbidden. Nevertheless, Ariel ignores his command, enlisting the help of the tropical fish Flounder (Jason Marin) and the crab Sebastian (Samuel E. Wright) to observe the above-water birthday celebrations of Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes), with whom she quickly falls in love. The festivities are soon interrupted by the arrival of a storm, but Ariel ensures that Eric returns to the safety of land.

Infatuated by the man whom she saved, Ariel commits to joining him on dry land. To do this, she meets with Urusla (Pat Carroll), an octopus-like sea witch. The villainous character offers Ariel human legs in return for her voice and gives her three days to kiss Eric. If she succeeds, she will retain her form; however, failure will strip away this gift and force the princess into Ursula’s eternal service.

Having found huge success, The Little Mermaid is recognized as a classic in Disney’s library of animation. The franchise continues to resonate with modern audiences, and there have been a variety of adaptations, one of which is a live-action movie starring actor Halle Bailey.
