Universal’s Greatest Monsters

In 1932, the first instalment in The Mummy franchise was released, joining the line-up of Universal Studios Monsters (alongside the likes of Dracula and The Wolf Man). The film, which was directed by Karl Freund, focuses on the Egyptian prince Imhotep (Boris Karloff), who is returned to the land of the living by a British archaeologist called Sir Joseph Whemple (Arthur Byron) and his team. Free to walk the Earth once again, Imhotep adopts the persona of a wealthy man by the name of Ardeth Bay and seeks to reunite with his former lover, princess Anck-su-namun. His desires become reality when he meets Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann), a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the deceased princess.

The franchise was eventually rebooted in 1999, featuring director Stephen Sommers at the helm. This reboot introduces a new cast of characters: Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser), Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), and Jonathan Carnahan (John Hannah). Together, they inadvertently resurrect the high priest Imhotep (Arnold Voslooh), who was buried alive by the Medjai for murdering Pharaoh Seti I (Aharon Ipalé). Imhotep wants to bring Anck-su-namum (Patricia Velasquez), the Pharaoh’s mistress, back to life.

Following the successful reboot, The Mummy (1999) received two direct sequels: The Mummy Returns (2001) and Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (2008). The Scorpion King, a spin-off film series starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, ran in parallel to this. In 2017, the original series was rebooted again, following Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) as he releases the Egyptian princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella).
