A New Way To Play

A popular line of toys, Playmobil was conceived by the German inventor Hans Beck (known as the “Father Of Playmobil"), who was a trained cabinetmaker and a recreational builder of model airplanes. After a failed product pitch to the owner of the company Geobra Brandstätter, Beck was asked to develop toy figures targeted toward children (ages four to 12). Conducting several years of research, he designed a new product that was both simple and flexible, its size tailored for a child’s hand and its aesthetic inspired by children’s drawings (no nose, a wide smile, and a large head). This concept became an immense success, as young testers required little external influence to channel their imaginations.

In 1974, the first set of Playmobil toys — comprising knights, Native Americans, and construction workers — made its debut in Geobra Brandstätter display rooms. (Prior to the introduction of this line, the company specialized in the manufacturing of handles and casket ornaments.) Those who first viewed the product were initially sceptical; nevertheless, the line achieved sales of three million Deutschmarks in its first year. Encouraged to continue production, the company launched hundreds of new sets over the subsequent decades, and the brand is now recognized as a major competitor of LEGO.

Despite being targeted at young children, these toys have been repurposed by many adult collectors to form stop-motion movies. Each figure includes hands that can grip and hold objects, which are practical for acting out unique scenarios.
