The Princess And The Thief

Released in 2010, Tangled — which draws inspiration from “Rapunzel”, a fairytale published by the Brothers Grimm — is an animated film by Walt Disney Pictures. The plot centers on a young princess called Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), whose golden hair possesses healing properties. She was born with this gift after her sick mother was rejuvenated by a magical flower, which Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) used so that she could remain immortal. Having lost the flower to a force of royal soldiers, she abducts the newly birthed Rapunzel and indulges the properties of her locks. To Gothel’s dismay, the girl’s hair loses its abilities when removed from her head, turning brown.

Hidden inside a tall tower, Rapunzel knows little about the outside world; however, she marvels at the distant sky lanterns that are released on her birthday, a beacon from the king and queen to their lost daughter. Sadly, when she implores Gothel to grant her permission to take a closer look, her request is denied. Soon after this, the thief Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert (Zachary Levi) takes refuge in her tower, having stolen Rapunzel’s crown from the palace. The imprisoned princess knocks him out and hides the crown, and when he wakes, she insists that he escort her to the lights. Thus, the journey begins.

In 2012, a short film set in this fantasy world made its debut: Tangled Ever After. It follows in the footsteps of Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, a three-season television series that explored the aftermath of the original movie.
