It’s Time To Duel

Created by writer and illustrator Kazuki Takahashi, Yu-Gi-Oh! is a popular Japanese manga series that made its debut in 1996 (published in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump). The story focuses on Yugi Mutou, a young boy who is often bullied by his peers. His life changes when he unlocks the Millenium Puzzle, which causes his body to play host to an ancient spirit known as Atem. This spirit, revealed to be a Pharaoh from Ancient Egyptian times, protects Yugi and his friends from those who have negative intentions, challenging them to the Shadow Games. The loser of these games is subjected to a punishment referred to as a Penalty Game.

In 1998, an anime adaptation was released by Toei Animation. A second series, titled Duel Monsters, aired in 2000 and ran for a total of 224 episodes. This interpretation of the manga begins from the end of the seventh volume and wraps up the remainder of the source material’s narrative across five seasons.

A spin-off anime called Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (2004–2008) centers around a new generation of characters who attend Duel Academy, which was founded by Seto Kaiba (a character from the original series). In this academy, young students learn to become better duelists. Initially, they are assigned to different dorms, each of which adopts a theme that reflects the three Egyptian God cards: Obelisk Blue (the highest-ranking group), Ra Yellow (composed of those who score well), and Slifer Red (those in need of improvement). Jaden Yuki and his friends — such as Syrus Truesdale and Alexis Rhodes — make up the central cast.
