Created in 1953 by esteemed author Ian Flemming, the character James Bond (also known as 007) has featured in more than a dozen novels. Since Flemming’s death, various authors have continued his work: Kingsley Amis, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffery Deaver, William Boyd, and Anthony Horowitz.

In addition to the books, there have been a number of film adaptations based on James Bond, such as Dr. No (1962), Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Golden Eye (1995), Casino Royale (2006), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), and No Time To Die (2021). Accordingly, many high-profile actors have portayed 007: David Niven, Barry Nelson, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig — as of 2021.

Each iteration of the franchise has placed its own spin on the source material; however, the essence of the character has remained consistent. Bond is a martini-drinking, sports-car-driving womaniser who works for MI6. His occupation involves putting an end to the schemes that threaten Britain and its populace. To help him accomplish his task, Q (the head of Q Branch) provides him with high-tech gadgets and vehicles, including his synonymous Aston Martin DB5.

007 is the principle character of the franchise, but he is not the only recognisable figure in pop culture. The novels and films have made the villains equally iconic. Fans will immediately recognise the likes of Auric Goldfinger, Le Chiffre, Dr. No, and Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
