The third season of Stranger Things has proved to be a massive hit with viewers, breaking records at Netflix.

Millions of us couldn't wait to return to the Upside Down to be reunited with Eleven and the gang, so it is no surprise it has broken the streaming service's viewer records in only a few days.

According to Netflix, more than 40 million households started watching the show within the first four days of its release, which is more than any other movie or tv series.

Over 18 million households have already finished the entire third season, which ends with an epic one and a quarter hour finale.

The service shared the news in a tweet writing:

Stranger Things 3 is breaking Netflix records! 40.7 million household accounts have been watching the show since its July 4 global launch — more than any other film or series in its first four days. And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.

Netflix only started sharing their viewing figures at the start of this year, revealing the Sandra Bullock film Bird Box had been watched by 80 million households within the first four weeks of its release.

The show Umbrella Academy meanwhile was watched by 45 million households within its first month, a number Stranger Things is well on its way to beating.

Netflix only includes households which watched more than 70% of the episode or movie.
