When hot-shot car salesman Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) discovers that his father has only left him his Buick Roadmaster in his will he is determined to find out where his father's remaining 3 million has gone. Charlie soon finds out that the money is being directed to a mental institution where he meets his Autistic brother he never knew he had, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman).

When Charlie's make or break car deal is being threatened by the EPA he takes Raymond on a cross-country road trip in hope that Raymond's remarkable skill with numbers will help him make the 80'000 he needs to save his career. But will the trip bring the two closer together and can Charlie look after his brother possibly for the rest of his life?
