The Final Frontier

Envisioned by Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek is a science-fiction franchise that comprises various forms of media, the most prominent iterations being TV shows and movies. The franchise made its on-screen debut in 1966, taking the world by storm with Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS).

The Original Series follows the crew of the USS Enterprise (NNC-1701), a starship captained by James T. Kirk (played by actor William Shatner). Exploring the unknown corners of the universe on behalf of Starfleet Command, Captain Kirk is joined by a number of allies: Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (James Doohan), Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig), Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett), and Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney).

In 1987, a sequel series titled Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) made its television debut. Set many decades after the events of Captain Kirk’s five-year mission, the show — which ran for seven seasons — follows the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) and its untested crew: Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), Worf (Michael Dorn), Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Dr. Katherine Pulaski (Diana Muldaur), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Data (Brent Spiner), and Wesley (Wil Wheaton).

In addition to the myriad of series, there have also been multiple movies: The Motion Picture (1979), The Wrath Of Khan (1982), The Search For Spock (1984), The Voyage Home (1986), The Final Frontier (1989), The Undiscovered Country (1991), Generations (1994), First Contact (1996), Insurrection (1998), Nemesis (2002), Star Trek (2009), Into Darkness (2013), and Beyond (2016).
