Written by the world-famous author Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957) is an illustrated story published by Random House. The book follows its eponymous character, who was born with a heart described as “two sizes too small.” Living atop Mount Crumpet, the green-colored creature resents his neighbours, the Christmas-loving Whos. As they prepare for the big day to arrive in Whoville, the Grinch concocts his own plans, his mind set on putting an end to the celebrations.

With Max (his loyal dog companion), he dresses in the guise of Santa Claus and departs his mountain cave to steal each and every present left under the Christmas tree. His mission goes as planned; however, the Grinch is bemused when morning arrives and the Whos continue to sing. Realizing that there is more to Christmas than presents, he finds his heart growing and returns the stolen goods to their intended recipients.

Since the original book was released, there have been a number of multi-media adaptations. In 2000, actor Jim Carrey took on the role of the Grinch for a live-action movie, which also features Anthony Hopkins as the narrator. Likewise, almost two decades later, Benedict Cumberbatch lent his vocal talents to the character, starring in an animated adaptation by Universal Pictures.
