What Happens After Midnight

Regarded as one of the best horror films of all time, the first entry in the Gremlins franchise was released in 1984. The movie focuses on Billy Peltzer (played by Zach Galligan), whose father purchases a strange Christmas gift for him: a mogwai. This small fur-covered creature is no ordinary pet, having very specific rules for ownership. First, he cannot be exposed to light of any kind, the consequence fatal. Second, he should not interact with water. And finally, under no circumstances should they be fed after midnight.

Unfortunately, after an accidental spillage, Billy finds himself with five more mogwai, all of which spawned from Gizmo (Howie Mandel), the aptly named original creature. To make matters worse, the newcomers — led by their ringleader, Stripe (Frank Welker) — manage to trick their unsuspecting owner into feeding them beyond the allotted time, sabotaging his clock. The consequences of such a mishap soon become apparent, with the seemingly harmless creatures transforming into large reptilians. In this form, they start rampaging throughout Kingston Falls, and the responsibility to put things right falls to Billy.

In 1990, a sequel movie subtitled The New Batch made its debut. The stakes are massively raised for this entry, taking Gizmo to New York City, where he again spawns a group of misbehaving mogwai. Contained inside a modern high-rise building called the Clamp Center, the mogwai — which quickly evolve into gremlins — threaten to wreak havoc around the city should they find a way to escape, and Billy, a worker in the building, must ensure that this doesn’t come to pass.
