Heroes Of The Cosmos

The first rendition of the Guardians Of The Galaxy appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (1969), a one-shot title intended to place the spotlight on lesser-known characters. At this point in time, the team comprised Vance Astro, Martinex T'Naga, Captain Charlie-27, and Yondu Udonta. However, they were replaced in Annihilation: Conquest #6 (2008), which saw the formation of a new line-up: Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Phyla-Vell, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Adam Warlock.

Unlike their predecessors, who hailed from Earth-691 in the 31st century, this team existed in the mainline Marvel Universe, Earth-616. Their sole purpose was to curb future calamities before they could escalate, a preventative measure influenced by the prior invasion of the Kree. To give themselves the means to traverse the far corners of the cosmos, they established a base of operations on the space station Knowhere, which housed a sophisticated teleportation device.

Drawing inspiration from the modern iteration of the Guardians Of The Galaxy, envisioned by writer Dan Abnett and inker Andy Lanning, a self-titled film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was released in 2014. It featured five of the characters from the source material, and they were portrayed by Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldaña (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax The Destroyer), Vin Diesel (Groot), and Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon). The newly united team, faced with the prospect of the entire galaxy being destroyed, determine to stop Ronan The Accusor (Lee Pace), a fanatical member of the Kree who has his sights set on harnessing the power of an Infinity Stone.
