Prior to the identity being passed to Carol Danvers, who first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968), it was the alien Mar-Vell / Walter Lawson who assumed the role of Captain Marvel. The pair met at a United States Air Force military base, where Danvers worked as the Security Chief, and the abilities possessed by Mar-Vell — such as superhuman strength and durability — were bestowed upon his human acquaintance following the explosion of the ‘Psyche-Magnetron,’ a device with the unintended capability to merge their genetic structure.

In the late ’70s, writer Gerry Conway and artist John Buscema revisited this plot point, giving Danvers her own superhero persona: Ms. Marvel. She would eventually adopt the alias used by Mar-Vell, whom she greatly admired, on the pages of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s 2012 solo title of the same name. This saw the character receive a new outfit in the form of a jumpsuit; however, it retained her traditional Colors and sash.

Danvers made the jump to live-action film in 2019, when she filled the leading position in a self-titled origin movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Actor Brie Larson stepped into her shoes, playing the part of an amnesiac living on the planet Hala. Unable to recall her name or past, our hero — going by the name of Vers — is haunted by nightmares and compelled to serve the Kree Empire as a member of Starforce. This all changes after she is captured by the Skrulls, the supposed antagonistic enemy of the Kree, with the green-skinned aliens probing her mind for information regarding a Dr. Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening). After escaping the vessel in which she was imprisoned, Vers finds herself on a collision course with Earth, where she must uncover her forgotten history.
