The Clone Wars Begins

In 2002, director George Lucas released the second instalment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Episode II – Attack Of The Clones. This film picks up ten years after the events of Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) and marks the beginning of the Clone Wars, a large-scale conflict that was mentioned by actor Alec Guinness’s “Old Ben” Kenobi in Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).

At the beginning of the story, it is revealed that former Jedi Master Count Dooku (Christopher Lee) is leading a Separatist movement, encouraging different planetary systems to renounce the Galactic Republic and join the Confederacy Of Independent Systems. To stave off this growing threat, the Republic organizes a vote that will determine whether the Jedi receive an army to assist them. During the process, an assassination attempt is made on Senator Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman). Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), a Jedi Master, and his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), are instructed by the Jedi Council to act as her protectors.

After another failed attempt on the senator’s life, Obi-Wan is tasked with finding the bounty hunter responsible, leaving Anakin to protect Padmé alone. The Jedi Master’s search leads him to Kamino, where he finds a large clone army based on the genetic template of Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison). He follows Jango’s trail to Geonosis and discovers that Count Dooku is building a legion of battle droids. In response, the Republic allows the clones to be called upon.
