A Barbie World

Created in 1959 by Ruth Handler, Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by Mattel, an American toy company. Handler came up with the idea when she noticed her daughter assigning adult roles to her dolls. At the time, dolls were designed to represent children. Barbie dolls, on the other hand, took on a more adult form.

The first Barbie doll wore a black-and-white zebra-striped swimsuit, the signature topknot ponytail, and was available as either a blonde or brunette. Mattel marketed the doll as a "Teenage Fashion Model.” Due to its uniqueness, the toy quickly became a huge success, selling nearly 400,000 in the first year of production.

Since its debut, Barbie has been a leader in the market. Handler wanted to show little girls that they could be anything they wanted to be, capitalising on a gap in the market. Despite being the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits, Barbie remains one of the most popular doll brands to this day and is recognised on a global scale.
