Batman (otherwise known as Bruce Wayne) was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. He made his first appearance on the pages of Detective Comics #27 (1939), a landmark issue that propelled the character into the limelight. Later storylines would explore the origins of the character, justifying the Dark Knight’s war on the underbelly of Gotham City as a vengeful crusade driven by the death of his parents, both of whom were gunned down by a lowly criminal, Joe Chill.

In addition to contending with gun-toting thugs, Batman also finds himself at odds with supervillains. Some of his most notorious adversaries include (but are not limited to) the Joker, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Bane, Scarecrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn. Like the World’s Greatest Detective, they don themed outfits and possess unique talents. Fortunately, Gotham’s protector isn’t alone in his fight against villainy, for he is often supported by the Bat-Family, including the likes of Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Alfred (his steadfast butler).

Throughout the years, there have been several live-action portrayals of the Dark Knight: Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson — among others. All these individuals have left their mark on the character, some capitalising on the over-the-top theatricality of the Golden Age comics and others embracing a more grounded take on a psychologically damaged vigilante.
