A Superhero Of War

A character made for the war-time era, Rogers first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (1941). He immediately became popular Among readers, embodying the sense of patriotism that permeated the time with a costume and shield derived from the stars and stripes of the American flag. Like many people, he was a participant in the global conflict; however, his enlistment was less than conventional, as he was initially refused entry because of his frail stature. It was only when his courage was recognised by an army general that he had the opportunity to serve, being enhanced by an experimental serum that gave its recipient peak human abilities. His body capable of enduring the stresses of the frontline, Rogers faced the many enemies of the Allies, including villains such as Red Skull and Baron Zemo.

Towards the end of the Second World War, Rogers found himself submerged beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic, where he would remain until the Avengers — a superhero team composed of Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor, the Hulk (Bruce Banner), Ant-Man (Hank Pym), and the Wasp (Janet van Dyne) — uncovered his body and revived him. Still wanting to serve the forces of good, Rogers rotated between fighting alongside these modern-age heroes and the governmental security agency S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a series of live-action films, introduced the star-spangled man into its continuity with the release of The First Avenger (2011), which placed actor Chris Evans in the shoes of Rogers. Faithfully adapting the source material, the plot follows the exploits of the character amid the war. Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) threatens to use a cosmic item known as the Tesseract to achieve victory on behalf of the sinister organisation Hydra.
