The Original Super Soldier

Having been created during the height of the Second World War, Captain America / Steve Rogers is a hero that embodies the patriotism of the country after which he was named. His early appearances, overseen by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, saw the character facing the Axis powers, and this garnered the approval of readers. Unfortunately, interest in the star-spangled man declined once the war dissipated, and his solo title was cancelled in the early 50s. Rogers didn’t reappear until the 60s, after which point he has remained a staple of Marvel’s yearly publications.

Throughout his formative years, the man who would become the United States' greatest icon was a frail specimen, unfit to enlist in the military. However, Rogers’s courage and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of his country didn’t go unnoticed, as General Chester Phillips offered him the chance to participate in an experimental program intended to create a super soldier. Enhanced to the point of physical perfection, Rogers adopted a dual identity and aided the war effort by participating in various conflicts. During this time, he received a shield, which he used to combat threats such as Red Skull, Baron Zemo, and the Wax Man.

Modern comics most often take place in a modern setting, the character having been suspended in ice for decades. He joined present-day continuity after being rescued by the Avengers in the fourth issue of their self-titled series, and in recognition of his superhero career, they initiated him into their ranks.
