Old Rivals Meet Again

Released on YouTube Red in 2018, the first season of the critically acclaimed TV series Cobra Kai gave fans of the original Karate Kid movies the opportunity to re-immerse themselves in the world of high-kicking martial arts. However, unlike its predecessor, the show focuses on Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who was defeated by Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) during the 1984 All-Valley Karate Tournament.

Several decades have passed since Johnny’s defeat, and when viewers meet him again, he is a middle-aged handyman with an estranged son from a previous marriage, Robby (Tanner Buchanan). To make things worse, an argument against one of his clients causes him to lose his job. Fortunately, fate intervenes after he rescues Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), his teenage neighbour, from some attacking bullies. He is encouraged open the doors of the Cobra Kai dojo, and he welcomes those who have found themselves at the receiving end of a bully’s hostilities.

Inadvertently, Johnny’s attempts to capture the past reignite his old rivalry with Daniel, who is living an affluent lifestyle as the owner of a car-dealership chain. Married to Amanda (Courtney Henggeler), the former karate champion has two children, Samantha (Mary Mouser) and Anthony (Griffin Santopietro), but he struggles to form a strong parental connection, his emotional state affected by the death of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). It is this shared inability to move forward that instigates conflict for Johnny and Daniel.
