Summer Lovin’

Grease (1978), directed by Randal Kleiser, is a film adaptation of Jim Jacob and Warren Casey’s popular 1971 stage musical. Set in 1958, the story follows the romantic relationship of Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), who meet at the beach during summer. Sadly, Sandy is supposed to return to Australia, her native country, and the pair part ways with the knowledge that they may never see each other again.

Returning to Rydell High School, Danny is oblivious to the fact that Sandy’s parents have decided to stay and that she is now attending the same school. He returns to lead the T-Birds — a greaser gang comprising Sonny (Michael Tucci), Putzie (Kelly Ward), Kenickie (Jeff Conaway), and Doody (Barry Pearl) — while Sandy ingratiates herself with the Pink Ladies. These greaser girls, each of whom dons pink clothing, includes Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Marty (Dinah Manoff), Jan (Jamie Donnelly), and Frenchy (Didi Conn). Throughout the movie, the smitten high schoolers rekindle their relationship, facing many ups and downs along the way.

In 1982, a sequel was released by director and choreographer Patricia Birch. This installment picks up two years after the conclusion of the original, shifting the focus to two new characters: Michael Carrington (Maxwell Caulfield) and Stephanie Zinone (Michelle Pfeiffer). The cousin of Sandy Olsson and an English exchange student, Michael quickly falls for Stephanie, who is the new leader of the Pink Ladies, and he adopts the persona of the “Cool Rider” to gain her affection.
