They Don’t Make Mistakes

Created by author Robert Ludlum, the Bourne series of novels began as a contained trilogy: The Bourne Identity (1980), The Bourne Supremacy (1986), and The Bourne Ultimatum (1990). However, following Ludlum’s passing, his estate allowed Eric Van Lustbader to continue his work. Another eleven novels would be released: Legacy, Betrayal, Sanction, Deception, Objective, Dominion, Imperative, Retribution, Ascendancy, Enigma, and Initiative.

In 2002, director Doug Liman released his live-action film adaptation of Identity. The movie starred Matt Damon in the leading role. A further four films were released: Supremacy (2004), Ultimatum (2007), Legacy (2012), and Jason Bourne (2016).

The narrative follows the eponymous Jason Bourne, an amnesiac who is found floating in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. The only clues to his identity are two gunshot wounds to the back and a hip-implanted device displaying the number of a Swiss safety deposit box. Discovering that he is a government-sanctioned assassin, Bourne goes on the run. Over the course of the next two films, he unravels the truth behind his past.

Unlike prior films, Legacy followed a new character: Aaron Cross (played by Jeremy Renner). Much like Bourne, Cross works for the US government. However, his black-ops division is known as Operation Outcome. Following Bourne’s public exposure of Treadstone and Blackbriar, Cross’s handlers decide to kill him.

In addition to the films, there is also a Treadstone TV series. This show explores the operations of the CIA black-ops program that Bourne used to be part of. The series, however, was cancelled after one season.
