Hero For Hire

Luke Cage (also known as Power Man) made his first appearance in Luke Cage, Hero For Hire #1 (1972). A member of the Marvel Universe, he is renowned as being the first black superhero to star in their own self-titled comic book.

In the comics, Carl Lucas (the character’s real name) started his life as a member of a gang called the Rivals. He was friends with a fellow gang member called Willis Stryker, who eventually betrayed him by planting heroin in his apartment and tipping off the police. Falsely imprisoned, Lucas lets out his anger by fighting with other inmates and attempting to escape. He was subsequently transferred to Seagate Prison, where he volunteered for an experimental procedure that gives him superhuman strength and durability.

Once he was released, Lucas started using the name Luke Cage and adopted the superhero alias Power Man. Using this alias, Cage offered his crime-fighting services to those who could afford his prices. He eventually joined forces with Danny Rand (Iron Fist), forming the Heroes For Hire.

In 2015, the character featured in the first season of Netflix’s Jessica Jones. Played by Mike Colter, he later received his own TV series, which ran for a total of two seasons. 2017 saw the release of The Defenders, a show that brought together Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Iron Fist (Finn Jones), and Luke Cage (Colter) to battle the Hand.
