A Quirky Anime

Created by writer and illustrator Kōhei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia began as a Japanese manga series (published in Weekly Shōnen Jump) before being adapted to an anime by the animation studio Bones. The original manga has spawned a number of spin-offs, such as My Hero Academia: Smash!! (2015–2017), My Hero Academia: Vigilantes (2016), and My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions (2019).

Set in a world where 80 percent of the population is born with superpowers (referred to as “Quirks”), My Hero Academia focuses on a non-powered boy called Izuku Midoriya, who is picked on by Katsuki Bakugo, his childhood friend. However, he is determined to become a Hero — one of few government-sanctioned individuals who face Villains (those who choose to abuse their powers) — and his wish is granted when he receives the “One For All” Quirk from the world’s number-one Pro Hero, All Might. This famous figure became weakened after a previous confrontation with All For One, a powerful Villian, and he believes that Izuku is a suitable replacement after watching him perform a heroic act. With his new powers and an already broad knowledge of how to be a hero, Izuku (now going by his nickname, Deku) joins U.A. High School and befriends his classmates in Class 1-A.
