The Evolution Of TCGs

The first iteration of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCG) was released in 1996, its original publishers being Media Factory (in Japan) and Wizards Of The Coast (in the United States). Incorporating the core elements of the franchise, the game puts players in the role of a Trainer, an individual who captures and trains creatures of all shapes and sizes. With their loyal companions — represented in the form of trading cards — players must face various opponents, attempting to inflict damage with the intent of knocking their rival’s Pokémon out. Doing so earns the player a Prize card, which takes them one step closer to winning the game.

In the PTCG, there are two fundamental card types: Basic and Evolved. However, these generic subsets contain a mix of rarities, the most coveted of which are Secret Rare cards. Often presented in shiny holofoil surrounded by a golden border, they are uniquely valuable and can feature useful game-winning attributes.

As all fans are aware, the world of Pokémon is home to many creatures, most of which can be segregated into different types. These include Grass (Green), Fire (Red), Water (Blue), Lightning (Yellow), Psychic (Purple), Fighting (Brown/Orange), Darkness (Black), Metal (Silver), Dragon (Gold), Fairy (Pink), and Colorless (White). To provide an authentic experience, the PTCG offers a mix of obscure and well-known creatures, such as Pikachu and Charizard.
