Programmed To Uphold The Law

Conceived in the mind of writer Edward Neumeier, RoboCop (1987) is a science-fiction movie that was directed by Paul Verhoeven. The story is set in a near-future Detroit, which is suffering from an influx of crime and a lack of resources. To save itself, the city allows Omni Consumer Products (OCP), a massive corporation, to take control of its police department. However, their implementation of robotics goes horribly awry when ED-209 kills an executive, and this gives Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer) the opportunity to propose his own solution, the RoboCop project.

A candidate for Morton’s project becomes available after police officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is murdered on active duty at the hands of a gang led by Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith). Transformed into an armored and emotionless cyborg, Murphy upholds the protocols programmed into him: serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law. As time passes, his colleagues start to recognize him, and memories of his former life return. He soon realizes that OCP Senior President Dick Jones (Ronny Cox) played a part in his death, the company man having hired Boddicker into his service. Nevertheless, Murphy is unable to arrest Jones, as a fourth protocol was implemented to incapacitate him should he ever turn against an OCP executive.

Following the critical acclaim of the first film, there have been a number of sequels and a reboot. A variety of video games and TV series have also been released, making RoboCop a successful multi-media franchise.
