To Overthrow An Empire

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), a movie set in a far-away galaxy, fills the gap between the original trilogy and the prequels, revealing how the Rebel Alliance came into possession of the plans to the Galactic Empire’s greatest superweapon, the Death Star. The narrative is shown from the perspective of Jyn, whose father — Galen (Mads Mikkelsen) — is coerced into using his scientific mind to complete development on said superweapon.

Over a decade later, Jyn is fully grown and a known enemy of the Imperials, having been raised by the extremist Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). The Rebels, aware of her parentage, ask that she help them rescue Galen so that they can learn about the Death Star and prevent it from being used to further subjugate the people living under the rule of the Empire. Though reluctant, Jyn does agree to lend her aid, and the intelligence officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and the droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) are assigned to assist her. However, it is not revealed to Jyn that Cassian has an ulterior motive, the Rebels having ordered him to assassinate Galen for his part in the Death Star’s construction.
