The Rules Of Hell

Released on Netflix in 2021, Squid Game is South Korean drama TV series that centers around a contest in which 456 down-on-their-luck players compete for a large sum of money. The show primary follows Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who is approached by a well-dressed man (Gong Yoo) offering the opportunity to clear his huge debts. Wanting to reclaim custody of his daughter and pay for his mother’s medical bills, Gi-hun accepts and meets a masked driver at a discrete location. He is quickly knocked unconscious by a gas after he enters the vehicle, and he wakes in a strange room, surrounded by hundreds of other players, one of whom is his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo).

Various men dressed in pink suits and wearing masks adorned with different symbols enter the room and guide the contestants to the first event, a game of “Red Light, Green Light.” At first, the participators are calm, finding the whole situation amusing; however, their jovial attitude promptly changes when one of the players is gunned down for being caught by a large doll fitted with a motion detector. Panicking, a large portion of the players are eliminated. Gi-hun, on the other hand, survives with a helping hand from Abdul Ali (Anupam Tripathi).

Despite the trepidations of the contestants, most of them choose to continue. The rest of the series places these characters — including Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon), a North Korean defector; Oh Il-nam (O Yeong-su), an old man with a brain tumor; Jang Deok-su (Heo Sung-tae), an indebted gangster; and Han Mi-nyeo (Kim Joo-ryoung) — into a number of life-ending games.
