Soldiers Of The Galactic Empire

Designed by Andrew Ainsworth, stormtroopers (their name derived from Imperial German Sturmtruppen) feature prominently in the Star Wars original trilogy, having made their first appearance in Episode IV – A New Hope (1977). They serve the Galactic Empire as its principal military force, securing the many planets that populate a galaxy far, far away.

Around the time of the original trilogy, the “bucketheads” were composed of highly trained recruits, all of whom pledged their undying allegiance to Emperor Palpatine (played by Ian McDiarmid). However, their origins stem from the era of the Clone Wars, a time that was explored during the prequels. The traditional stormtrooper is the evolutionary result of the Republic’s Kamino-bred army, which was genetically engineered with the DNA of Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison). Once the cloning program was decommissioned, regular human recruits took their place; nevertheless, they retained the distinctive appearance of their predecessors, albeit with some minor alterations.

In the sequel trilogy, which began with Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), stormtroopers operate under the First Order. A significant proportion of them comprise abducted children who were conditioned to be loyal to the Supreme Leader. FN-2187/Finn (John Boyega), a major protagonist in the films, was one of these soldiers. He served the First Order until he made the decision to defect, at which point he rescued the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).
