An Unexpected Journey

Director Peter Jackson returned in 2012 with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, a prequel to his iconic Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Following this, there were two more instalments: The Desolation Of Smaug (2013) and The Battle Of The Five Armies (2014).

Based on author J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel of the same name, the films follow a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is coerced into joining a quest to reclaim the ancient dwarven homeland of Erabor — the Lonely Mountain — by Gandalf The Grey (Ian McKellen). However, this is no easy task; the mountain is guarded by its claimant, a fire-breathing dragon known as Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). Accompanied by thirteen dwarves — Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), Kili (Aidan Turner), Bofur (James Nesbitt), Dwalin (Graham McTavish), Balin (Ken Stott), Bifur (William Kircher), Fili (Dean O’Gorman), Dori (Mark Hadlow), Gloin (Peter Hambleton), Nori (Jed Brophy), Ori (Adam Brown), Oin (John Callen), and Bombur (Stephen Hunter) — Bilbo must sneak into the dragon’s domain and steal the legendary Arkenstone.

While the dwarves attempt to reclaim their homeland, Gandalf tackles an altogether different matter: a malevolent necromancer residing in Dol Guldur. His side quest brings back some familiar faces from the original Lord Of The Rings movies: Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Galadriel (Cate Blanchett). Audiences also encounter Radagast The Brown (Sylvester McCoy), a wizard like Gandalf.
