A Movie Wonderland

The late ‘50s saw the birth of cinema’s quirkiest filmmaker: Tim Burton. In the modern day, he is recognized as a prolific director and pioneer of artistic individuality; however, he began his career in the humble set of his backyard. He used to create short films that incorporated stop motion, one of his earliest projects being The Island Of Doctor Agor. Later in his life, while attending the California Institute Of The Arts, Burton created King And Octopus and Stalk Of The Celery Monster, the latter of which gained the attention of Walt Disney Productions. This landed him a position in their animation division, where he contributed to projects such as The Fox And The Hound (1981), Tron (1982), and The Black Cauldron (1985).

Burton’s first live-action production was a spin on Hansel And Gretel, a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. Despite the film’s short-lived screening, he got another chance to flex his creative muscles with the short film Frankenweenie (1984), a film that resulted in his firing under the justification of it being unmarketable to younger audiences. Regardless, he caught the eye of actor Paul Reubens, who chose him to direct Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985). The massive profitability of this film, which made over $40 at the North American box office, kickstarted Burton’s transition into making blockbuster films.

Nowadays, Burton’s filmography includes Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Planet Of The Apes (2001), Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (2007), Alice In Wonderland (2010), and many others. His work often utilizes the talents of Johnny Depp (actor), Helena Bonham Carter (actor), and Danny Elfman (composer).
