The Birth Of A Survivor
The first Tomb Raider video game, which was developed by Core Design, released in 1996 on the Sega Saturn, MS-DOS, and the PlayStation. In the game, players take control of Lara Croft, an English archaeologist who often embarks on high-risk adventures to find locations and artefacts of historical significance. The story centers around her pursuit of the Scion Of Atlantis, which businesswoman Jacqueline Natla has hired her to find.
Over the course of many years, several sequels were released. After Square Enix acquired the rights to create further instalments, developer Crystal Dynamics rebooted the franchise with Tomb Raider (2013). A massive success among fans, the game warranted two more sequels: Rise Of The Tomb Raider (2015) and Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (2018).
As well as the video games, the Tomb Raider franchise has been adapted to live-action film. 2001 saw the release of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the first instalment in a duology starring Angelina Jolie. The sequel, The Cradle Of Life, hit theaters in 2003. Following this, director Roar Uthaug rebooted the franchise in 2018 with actor Alicia Vikander.
Tomb Raider (2018) focuses on Lara’s journey to find her father, who was last seen on a mythical island off the coast of Japan, Yamatai. On this island, she meets and is imprisoned by Mathias Vogel, an expedition leader searching for the lost tomb of Himiko. He is funded by the mysterious organization Trinity, which intends to harness Himiko’s power.
