Robots In Disguise

Created by Hasbro (an American toy manufacturer) and Takara Tomy (a Japanese toy manufacturer), Transformers is a multi-media franchise that centers around the ongoing war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, both of whom seek to control Cybertron, their home planet. The franchise made its debut in 1984, launching as a line of toys. These toys were originally part of the Diaclone and Micro Change lines, but they were rebranded for Western territories. Boasting the ability to transform into various vehicles and animals, Transformers figures provided a unique concept and offered tons of opportunities for creative play.

The narrative for the franchise was envisioned by key individuals at Marvel Comics: Jim Shooter, Dennis O’Neil, and Bob Budiansky. They introduced Optimus Prime and Megatron, initially implementing them into the main Marvel Universe, where they had a brief encounter with Spider-Man. Over time, the story was expanded upon by an animated TV series, which focused on the Autobots’ attempts to find new energy sources while fighting against the Decepticons. The show ran from 1984 to 1987 and even spawned a full-length film, Transformers: The Movie (1986).

In addition to the aforementioned media, many live-action adaptations have been released. Michael Bay directed the first five instalments — Transformers (2007), Revenge Of The Fallen (2009), Dark Of The Moon (2011), Age Of Extinction (2014), and The Last Knight (2017) — and Travis Knight took the lead on Bumblebee (2018), a spin-off film starring actor Hailee Steinfeld.
