A New Breed Of Heroes
The Umbrella Academy originated as a series of comic books created by Gerard Way (the writer, who is also recognised as the lead vocalist of rock band My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Bá (the artist). The story is told over a number of different mini-series, beginning with Apocalypse Suite (2007–2008). Since the completion of the first six issues, there have been multiple volumes: Dallas, Hotel Oblivion, and Sparrow Academy.
The narrative of the comics focuses on the eponymous Umbrella Academy, a group composed of seven superpowered children who were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (the Monocle): Luther (Spaceboy), Klaus (the Séance), Allison (the Rumor), Number Five (the Boy), Diego (the Kraken), Ben (the Horror), and Vanya (the White Violin). They are just a small sample of 43 children born on the same day to women who showed no prior signs of pregnancy.
In 2019, the streaming service Netflix released the first season of a live-action Umbrella Academy TV series. The show starred Elliot Page (Vanya), Aidan Gallagher (Number Five), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Tom Hopper (Luther), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), David Castañeda (Diego), Justin H. Min (Ben), Jordan Claire Robbins (Grace Hargreeves/Mom), Colm Feore (Reginald Hargreeves), Mary J. Blige (Cha-Cha), and Cameron Britton (Hazel) — among others. After its success, it continued with further seasons.
