The Original Captain Marvel

Created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck in 1939, Shazam (formerly known as Captain Marvel) made his first appearance in Whiz Comics #2, which was published under Fawcett Comics. DC Comics acquired the rights to the character in 1991, integrating him and the extended Marvel Family into the wider DC Universe.

Although Shazam appears to be a full-grown man, the hero is in fact a young boy called Billy Batson. He was given his powers — wisdom, strength, stamina, speed, flight, and more — by the Wizard Shazam, who had assessed him to be a suitable champion. Billy has the ability to share these powers with others, and he does so with his friends and adopted family, including Freddy Freeman and Mary Batson. Collectively, they are known as the Shazam Family.

Over the course of his history, the character has gained various enemies: Doctor Sivana, Black Adam, and Mister Mind — amongst others. He has also interacted with a number of heroes, fighting alongside some of DC’s greatest icons.

In 2019, Warner Bros. Pictures released a live-action film adaptation of the comic series. Titled Shazam!, the movie was directed by David F. Sandberg and starred actor Zachary Levi (as Shazam) and Asher Angel (as a non-transformed Billy Batson). While learning to use his abilities, Billy finds himself face to face with the villainous Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong).
