Enter The Wasteland

Created by Interplay Entertainment, the Fallout franchise comprises a number of video games that transport players to a post-apocalyptic environment. The first entry in the series, developed by Black Isle Studios, was released in 1997. Establishing turn-based gameplay mechanics, the title centers around an inhabitant of the Vault, a nuclear shelter designed to protect its residents from the deadly environment of a planet suffering the after effects of a global nuclear war, which took place decades prior.

In 2008, Bethesda Studios — who had purchased the franchise from Interplay Entertainment — released their first game set in this world: Fallout 3. They revitalized the gameplay by replacing the turn-based mechanics with real-time combat and took advantage of the capabilities of modern consoles (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) with the introduction of 3D graphics. Despite these changes, the narrative remains faithful to its roots, allowing players to explore an open-world Washington D.C. reduced to ruins after the Great War (the event that precipitated the nuclear apocalypse). Said players control an inhabitant of Vault 101 whose father has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. Compelled to venture to the surface, this character finds himself at odds with a group known as the Enclave, a remnant faction of pre-war government.

Following the critical and commercial success of the third game, Bethesda continued to release more installments: Fallout 4 (2015) and Fallout 76 (2018). Developer Obsidian Entertainment also had the opportunity to leave their mark with a spin-off called New Vegas (2010).
