Unchanging Quality Since 1950

Bandai, a company that is headquartered in Japan, specializes in the creation of toys and plastic models. The business was founded in 1950 by Naoharu Yamashina, who was a textile wholesaler during the late ’40s. Struggling in the post-war economy, he packed up his belongings and departed to Tokyo, where he learned about the toy industry and managed to establish a small division that distributed these in-demand items. Eventually, Yamashina secured complete control of the toy division, which became a separate company known as Bandai-ya (a name derived from a Chinese phrase translating to “eternally unchanging”). His business was assisted by a publisher for the Weekly Toy News, Atsuko Tatsumi.

Having established itself by trading in various products (celluloid dolls, rubber swimming rings, and metallic toys), the company started developing its own products, the first of which was the Rhythm Ball, a simple beach ball that had been implanted with a bell. Over time, Bandai-ya’s revenue increased substantially, and their popular products found their way to the United States. This growth allowed the company to expand its operations to overseas territories, where they found massive success with the release of licensed Astro Boy action figures. Seeing the potential in existing franchises, they shifted their focus to supporting upcoming television series, which provided a platform for them to advertise tie-in products.

Today, Bandai manufactures hundreds of collectibles based on establish franchises: Dragon Ball Z, Animal Crossing, Digimon, My Hero Academia, Godzilla, King Kong, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, One Piece, Street Fighter, Naruto, Ultraman, and more.
