The Story Of Mowgli

Created by English author Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book (1894) originated as a collection of stories. These stories follow the exploits of various animal characters, such as Baloo (a bear) and Bagheera (a black panther), and a human (referred to as “man cub”) called Mowgli.

In 1967, Walt Disney Productions released an animated film adaptation of the same name, having chosen Wolfgang Reitherman as the director. Unlike its source material, this interpretation features a less bleak tone and implements a variety of up-beat songs (composed by George Bruns), though it originally followed Kipling’s work more closely. The story follows Mowgli (Bruce Reitherman), an orphan child who was adopted by the wolves Raksha and Rama (Ben Wright) after Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot) discovered him in the Indian jungles. One day, it is decided that Mowgli must return to his own kind, as Shere Khan (George Sanders) — a Bengal tiger with a taste for the flesh of man — has made his presence known. Mowgli, however, is resistant and embarks on his own path, a decision that leads him to Baloo The Bear (Phil Harris). Unfortunately, he faces many more obstacles on his journey, comprising the likes of the python Kaa (Sterling Holloway) and the orangutan King Louie (Louis Prima).

In addition to the fan-favorite animated film, there have been a number of live-action adaptations. Director Jon Favreau tackled the tale in 2016, while Andy Serkis presented his version in 2018’s Mowgli: Legend Of The Jungle.
