What Lies Beyond

Released in 2020, Soul is a computer-animated movie created by Pixar. Pete Doctor, a prolific figure at the company, wrote and directed the film, using the narrative as a creative outlet for his reflections on determinism and the concept of human personalities.

The story follows a pianist and music teacher living in New York City, Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx). Wanting to play jazz on a professional level, he auditions for a place in a quartet with the great Dorothea Williams (Angela Bassett) and is over the moon when she invites him to perform in one of her shows. Unfortunately, his excitement gets the better of him, and he accidently falls down a manhole. As his soul travels to the great beyond, Joe fights to stay alive, forcing himself into the Great Before, a place where souls are prepared for their passage to Earth.

Mentors are responsible for overseeing a soul’s training, and Joe is misidentified as one of them. Instructed to support the Earth-hating 22 (Tina Fey), he seizes the opportunity to claim her badge, which will allow him to return home. To do this, 22 must first discover her passion, a task that proves immensely difficult.
