The Warrior’s Journey

The 36th installment in Walt Disney’s library of animated features, Mulan (1998) was based on the Chinese legend Hua Mulan, a woman who posed as a man to prevent her father from being conscripted into the military. The animated film is set during the Han Dynasty and follows Fa Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) as she dons the guise of a man — “Fa Pin” — to join the defensive force gather to counter the Hun invasion, taking the place of her father, Fa Zhou (Soon-Tek Oh). To aid Mulan’s journey, the dragon Mushu (Eddie Murphy) travels by her side, his aim being to redeem himself in the eyes of the ancestors.

Once enlisted into the army, Mulan is placed under the command of Captain Li Shang (BD Wong), who teaches her how to fight. She is joined by a number of other recruits: Ling (Gedde Watanabe), Yao (Harvey Fierstein), and Chien-Po (Jerry Tondo). Eventually, her deception is uncovered, resulting from a wound she sustained. For her lies, Shang expulses her from the military; however, he soon realizes that she is the only person capable of keeping the Huns at bay.

In 2020, a live-action film based on Disney’s animated feature was released in the theaters. The plot mostly follows the established source material, but the cast is composed of many new faces: Yifei Liu (Fa Mulan), Donnie Yen (Commander Tung), Tzi Ma (Hua Zhou), Jason Scott Lee (Böri Khan), Yoson An (Chen Honghui), Ron Yuan (Sergeant Qiang), Gong Li (Xianniang), Jet Li (the Emperor Of China), and others.
