An Unforgettable Journey

Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures, Onward (2020) was directed by Dan Scanlon. The film takes place in a world where magic, which was once commonplace, has been made redundant by advancements in technology. Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland), a teenaged elf, and his older brother, Barley (Chris Pratt), live in the city of New Mushroomton with their mother, Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Before Ian was born, the boys’ father, Wilden (Kyle Bornheimer), passed away. To celebrate Ian’s 16th birthday, Laurel gives the boys a present from Wilden, which contains a magical staff, a Phoenix gem, and a letter. This letter details a way to return their father to the land of the living for 24 hours.

Wanting to meet his father, Ian casts the spell; however, Barley interrupts him during the process. Because of this, only the lower half of Wilden’s body appears. The boys, however, commit to finishing the spell before midnight and depart in Barley’s van, “Guinevere,” to find a second gem. Their journey brings them to a variety of exotic locations, such as Manticore’s Tavern, the Path Of Peril, and Raven’s Point.

Despite poor box-office conditions, Onward managed to be successful thanks to its popularity on streaming. It was also praised by critics, who complemented it for a healthy dose of humour and heart-touching moments.
