Classic British Comedy

Created by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, The Inbetweeners is a coming-of-age sitcom. The show follows four friends as they attempt to navigate their way through adolescent life: Will McKenzie (Simon Bird), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Jay Cartwright (James Buckley), and Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison). Attending the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive, an England-based secondary school, the group are faced with many comedic scenarios, such as awkward sexual encounters, dealings with school bullies, disinterested staff members, and oblivious parents.

Some of the most famous moments in the show include Neil punching a fish, Simon puking on his crush’s younger brother, Will hitting a disabled person with a frisbee, and Jay yelling at people waiting to catch a bus — that last one is particularly memorable.

The show aired on E4 from 2008 to 2010 (totalling three seasons) and became a massive critical success, receiving BAFTA award nominations as well as an American spin-off show. Due to low ratings, however, the American version was swiftly cancelled.

In 2011, a movie based on The Inbetweeners characters was released. The film took Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil to Malia following their graduation from school. Despite being intended as a conclusion for the series, the movie’s immense success warranted the creation of The Inbetweeners 2. The sequel similarly took the characters abroad. However, this trip landed them in Australia, where Jay decided to take his gap year.
