One Small Step For Man

The National Aeronautics And Space Administration (more commonly referred to as NASA) is an agency that specializes in all things related to outer space. It was founded in 1958, taking the place of the National Advisory Committee For Aeronautics (NACA), which was similar but predominantly focused on government applications. NASA, on the other hand, shifted its attention to civilian endeavours.

Throughout the agency’s history, it has accelerated the growth of human development exponentially. One of its greatest achievements is Project Apollo, a program that sought to send humans to the Moon, following in the footsteps of Project Mercury (which successfully conducted human spaceflights). This coincided with the Space Race, where the United States competed with the Soviet Union to be the first to accomplish these feats. In 1969, this objective was accomplished, as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down on the surface of the Moon.

Following this huge moment in human history, NASA continued its ambitious projects and created an independent space station called Skylab. Multiple crews inhabited the station, using their time beyond Earth’s orbit to learn more about microgravity and observe the Sun. Eventually, a joint-operated modular space station was developed, utilized by five space agencies: NASA (the US), Roscosmos (Russia), ESA (Europe), JAXA (Japan), and CSA (Canada). Scientific research is conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), and this provides the optimal environment for testing systems and equipment that will be required in the future.
