The Emperor Returns

The final instalment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Episode IX – Rise Of Skywalker, was released in 2019. J.J. Abrams returned to direct, having handed over the reins to Rian Johnson for Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017). This wrapped up the narrative that began with George Lucas’s Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), featuring the return of the Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) and the final appearances of franchise mainstays Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams).

At the start of the film, Emperor Palpatine — somehow alive after his plummet in Return Of The Jedi (1983) — announces his desire for revenge. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), who is now the leader of the First Order, finds him on the remote planet Exegol, where it’s revealed that he created Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) to lure the grandson of Darth Vader to the dark side. With Kylo on his side, the Emperor unveils his fleet of Star Destroyers.

The Resistance mobilises to repel this incoming threat, attempting to find a Sith Wayfinder, which can lead them to the Emperor’s location. While conducting the search, Rey (Daisy Ridley) learns the truth behind her heritage. She is the granddaughter of Palpatine, her parents having been killed by a Jedi hunter called Ochi. Luke, now a Force ghost, tells Rey that she should face Palpatine and gives her Leia’s lightsaber. This leads to the final confrontation of the Skywalker Saga.
