The Masters Of Film

The Criterion Collection — a company founded by Joe Medjuk, Robert Stein, and Aleen Stein — has been releasing new editions of classic and contemporary films since its establishment in 1984. Featuring high-quality restorations and a myriad of special features, these take the form of DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K UHD Blu-rays, and digital streaming.

Notably, the company is recognized for being the progenitor of the letterbox format (a technique that preserves the original aspect ratio of a film shot). A remastered edition of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956) was the first product to incorporate this form of presentation, adding black bars at the top and lower portion of the screen. After this point, Criterion made letterboxing an integral part of all releases that were originally shot in in widescreen aspect ratios.

They also distribute various multi-disk sets, special editions (containing bonus material such as alternate endings, deleted scenes, commentaries, documentaries, and trailers), definitive versions, and commentary soundtracks (featuring exclusive recordings).

Having existed for several decades, the business has managed to release hundreds of movies: The Harder They Come (1972), RoboCop (1987), Hard Boiled (1992), The Killer (1989), The Wages Of Fear (1953), Ran (1985), Beauty And The Beast (1946), and Seven Samurai (1954) — among others.
